Greg Anderson is Driver of the Week

By Claude Lewis

Greg Anderson has been racing many moons at the short track in Punta Gorda. “I began in 1992,” recalled the Englewood resident. “I’ve had a lot of fun through the years.” Most of his racing has been in the Road Warrior division where he still races but despite being a veteran, Anderson is not afraid to try new things.

For example, he teamed up with Craig Amboyan to win an Outlaw Street Stock switch-off race a couple of months ago at Charlotte County Motorsports Park. Then, last Saturday night, Anderson drove an old Ford Thunderbird to victory in the “Hatfields vs. McCoys” run-what-ya-brung race.

Of course, Anderson still enjoys racing in Road Warriors. Son Brandon is also back in the Road Warrior fold after taking some time off. “He’s back,” Greg said. “He got married, had a kid, now he’s ready to get back out on the track.”

Still, Anderson wants to try different types of racing. The promoter inside of him contacted CCMP owner Bobby Diehl about the possibility of starting up a run-what-you-brung Figure 8 division. He got Diehl’s blessings. The new division ran an exhibition Saturday night and will start running for real in the near future.

“We’ll run once a month when the Figure 8 boat race is,” Anderson said.

“It will have all types of cars Road Warriors, Thunder Trucks even Sportsman.” Anderson actually gives Amboyan credit for the idea. “Craig called and asked if I had ever done Figure 8 before,” Anderson said. “We decided it would be exciting.

The thing we want to make clear is, we’ll be racing, not trying to kill each other. Rubbing is racing, but we don’t want people beating the crap out of each other.” Anderson believes a balanced payout will help the division flourish.

“It will be $300 to win, $200 for second and $100 for third and it depends on car count for the rest of the field ” he said. “We’ll start the faster cars like Sportsman in the back.” For more information on the Figure 8s, call Anderson (941-270-0800) or Amboyan (941-613-2777).
